About 200 people took out a rally on the Beach Road on
Sunday on the occasion of the International Day of the Deaf to spread
awareness of the various problems of the hearing-impaired and the
importance of sign language.
R. Saravanan, president
of Puducherry Deaf Society, who led the rally, demanded that the
government appoint sign language instructors in all government
departments to help them get their grievances redressed.
They should also be granted driving licences and one per cent reservation in employment opportunities, he said.
The
members also urged the Puducherry government to appoint special
teachers for differently-abled students in all government and
government-aided schools in the Union Territory.
At
present there were 18 special teachers for around 3,000
differently-abled students studying from class I to XII in government
and aided schools here.
All these teachers had been
appointed by the government on a temporary basis. As per the directions
of the Delhi High Court and the guidelines of the Rehabilitation Council
of India there must be one special teacher for five differently-abled
students, the Deaf Society pointed out.
